How do I overcome my negative emotion(s)?

Yesterday (24.03.2022), we ran a poll on Instagram asking our followers to select what do they struggle with the most?

  • Expressing emotions

  • Processing emotions

  • Identifying emotions

  • Overcoming emotions

How interestingly, 100% of our followers said "overcoming their emotions" is the most challenging thing for them. So here I'm sharing one of my favorite techniques that I personally use every time I'm going through a lot (we all do) and suggest all my clients to use almost on a daily basis.

"Journaling !"

Writing down your emotions is such a simple yet powerful emotional release technique. It is almost as good as talking to your therapist!

You see, your words have power and each word you say or write has an impact on your life. For example - the chants, mantras and holy books that almost all of us have come across in our life at point or another and we are told to use them depending on what your situation is, what struggle you are dealing with, etc.

So as you write your emotions down in the form of words you start to release the emotion that has been bothering you in the form of words. And once these words (emotions) are out of our system we feel lighter!

So here is what you need to do..

Firstly, start off tuning into with what you're feeling. Write down all that you're feeling. Doesn't matter what it is, be it's you are scared, angry, ashamed, filled with hatred, love, or all of them, just though it all out on the paper. Pen it down all and don't stop until you feel you're completely empty. It's perfectly fine if you feel overwhelmed and start to cry in the middle of it, crying is another powerful way our body likes to release emotions. There is no shame in that and is absolutely natural for anyone irrespective of what gender, age, faith, nationality they are. So write it all down, this will declutter your mind and open you up to new ideas and thoughts and possibilities.

Now, think - did something recently happen which triggered that emotion in you? Write the first incident which comes to your mind (doesn't matter how big or small), write exactly what happened. But this time do not write about how you felt in that moment but as if you're writing a story, objectively. State all the minute details of the incident including what you and the other person said or did (if there's a second person involved). Clearly mention all that you can, in a chronological order without any judgements, without any emotions.

When you're done, I assure you, as you write (unbiasedly) you will realize what actually happened and how you could have handled the situation better (new possibility).

Once done, it is time to let go. Tear that paper away into as many pieces as you can (or want to) and then either bin them or throw them in flowing water (make sure the paper is biodegradable) or just burn it away (in a safe way and also we wary about environment).

How do you feel now? Any better? If you want you can do this for each emotion/experience individually or all together, whatever you feel comfortable with.

And now, pick a fresh clean paper, and write down the opposite of what you "were" feeling or what you'd like to replace that emotion with. You can choose to either write down either a single word, a sentence or recreate that experience in a positive way.

Write it down in bold big letters good few times until you want to. To make it even more powerful use green or red color to write it.

And, that's it! You're done! Free from your negative emotion and replaced with a new one too!

Check in with yourself - how are you feeling now?

You can choose to keep that paper with you as a reminder or do whatever you feel is right! There are no rules here!

If you struggle to do this at the first time, don't be upset with yourself, keep trying and I can assure you will come out with flying colors!!

Please do share in the comments if and when you try this trick and how did it help you? What changed? How did you feel before and after trying this powerful technique. Would love to hear from you!
